An Introduction to Michipicoten Island - Lake Superior's Wild Heart (2001) is a limited edition publication written and distributed by David C. Whyte, with the support and encouragement of David Wells of Naturally Superior Adventures, Russell Floren of Lynx Images, and Mort and Marie Purvis.
 
Part travelogue, part guidebook, part historical narrative, this well illustrated work explores Michipicoten's biology, physical features, and colourful history. Encompassing 20 chapters and 49 illustrations in it's 217 pages, An Introduction to Michipicoten Island also includes maps, species lists, a list of scenic highlights, and an amusing and informative account of the author's 12 day solo exploration of the island on foot and by sea kayak. This is the only book yet produced that deals exclusively with Michipicoten Island. Includes a bibliography with over 100 references.

About Mort and Marie Purvis

The Purvis family owned and operated the fishing station at Quebec Harbour, Michipicoten Island from 1934 to 1959. Mort is the grandson of James Purvis, and son of Ivan Purvis, who jointly ran the Purvis fishery. Mort and his wife Marie still own property and a summer home on Michipicoten Island.
